The Dota 2 ESL One Malaysia tournament was recently put on hold as a result of “unforeseen technical issues.” The event is currently on its fourth day. However, the playoffs were put on hold until the organizers fixed the issue.

After revealing the delay, ESL further announced that they would attend to the problem as soon as possible to enable the game to continue. They took to Twitter a while later to reveal that the first series between Entity and TSM was underway, and the issue was fixed. They, however, refrained from saying precisely what went wrong.

Prior to the delay, two series were slated to take place in the lower bracket between Entity and TSM, as well as Nigma Galaxy and Thunder Awaken. A third series will be in the lower bracket finals between either TSM or Entity and Fnatic.

The technical issues mentioned earlier were not the only instances when events in the 2022 ESL One Malaysia were paused. During the North American ESL One Malaysia Dota 2 qualification match between Nouns and Quincy Crew, the game had to be halted because one of the teams had to leave their gaming premises.

On July 28, the Quincy Crew were made to leave their hotel in the middle of the second game due to a fire alarm. The team won the first game and proceeded to the next shortly past midnight. However, the fire alarm went off two minutes into the game.

Two players from the team were able to explain what was happening shortly before they evacuated the building, and the team’s Twitter page confirmed their safety a while later. Quincy Crew later continued the game and won the match less than 20 minutes after they got back in.

Another notable incident was when Valve released Patch 7.32 during the event’s group stage. As a result, several game characters underwent changes that altered the entire course of the tournament.

While the change to the character’s abilities was unfamiliar to several teams, Team Secret seemed to get the hang of it quickly, thus gaining the most from Valve’s decision. Under the leadership of Clement “Puppey” Ivanov, Team Secret was able to win two series and get a tie in the third. Their efforts had Secret placed second in Group A.

The Dota 2 ESL One Malaysia tournament will come to a close on August 28, and the champion of the event will receive $175,000 USD. The team will also have bragging rights for the anticipated The International 2022, set to run from October 15 to October 30.

The International is the biggest competitive event in Dota 2 and boasts the largest prize pool, viewership, and stakes in esports as a whole. The event will be held at Singapore Indoor Stadium and SunTec Singapore this year and will see 20 teams from six regions competing for the grand prize.

Of the selected teams, 12 will qualify via their accumulated Dota Pro Circuit points through participation in regional leagues and Majors, while the remaining eight teams will have to scale past the many end-of-season qualifiers.

ESB returns with free Dota 2 betting predictions for three ESL One Malaysia bouts on Tuesday, August 23. Here are our selections for Team Secret vs Thunder Awaken, Team Aster vs Talon Esports, and OG vs Team Liquid, with esports betting odds courtesy of GG Bet.

TEAM SECRET vs THUNDER AWAKEN Dota 2 BETTING & MATCH DETAILS

Best Odds: Secret $1.77 | Draw $2.45 at GG Bet | TA $7.14
When: August 23, 2022 | 12:00 MYT

?Team Secret and Thunder Awaken last met at the ONE Esports Singapore Major in March 2021, when Secret won 2-0, but a lot has changed since, so we can’t put too much weight on that result. Not only have Team Secret made changes to their roster, but Thunder Awaken also field an entirely different lineup which has achieved some success this year.

Thunder Awaken are easily the best South American Dota 2 team, having won all but one regional event – a third-place finish in the DPC SA 2021/2022 Tour 1 Regional Final. They also did well at ESL One Stockholm, finishing in fifth-sixth place. Unfortunately, success was hard to come by for the Peruvian squad at the PGL Arlington Major, where they crashed out of the group stage with a 0-5-3 record.

Still, TA’s only defeats in Arlington came against Royal Never Give Up, OG, and eventual finalists PSG.LGD. That isn’t too bad, and it should make you wonder why esports betting sites have Thunder Awaken priced as $7.14 underdogs against Team Secret, who have not attended a single Major and haven’t achieved much on the Western European Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) either.

On paper, Team Secret look the stronger team, and their wins against Tundra and PSG.LGD at Riyadh Masters 2022 are nothing to sneeze at. But those results came nearly a month ago, and Secret have since made a roster change, replacing Daryl “iceiceice” Koh for Roman “Resolut1on” Fomynok, which might not work out as intended.

Thunder Awaken with a map handicap at $1.98 is a far more appealing wager than backing Secret to win. The real dreamers might also want to consider a half-unit wager on the outsiders to cause an upset.

TEAM ASTER vs TALON ESPORTS Dota 2 BETTING & MATCH DETAILS

Best Odds: Aster $1.63 | Draw $2.75 at GG Bet | Talon $7.38
When: August 23, 2022 | 12:15 MYT

?Even though their only title this year came in January, when they won Intel World Open Beijing, Team Aster have not disappointed with their performances. They placed second in the final Chinese DPC tour back in July and then claimed bronze at PGL Arlington Major the following month, losing only to the eventual champions, Team Spirit (0-2, 1-2).

Talon Esports have also achieved reasonable success this term, but that is only relative to the expectations we had for them. They fought their way back into the top division for SEA DPC Tour 3 and placed second – which, while impressive, is their only notable achievement of the year.

Many argue that Team Aster’s run at Arlington was a fluke, which might be true, but even so, they are much stronger than Talon Esports, who have not made much noise outside of regional competitions. At $1.63, Aster to win on Tuesday is a solid bet.

OG vs TEAM LIQUID Dota 2 BETTING & MATCH DETAILS

Best Odds: OG $2.40 | Draw $2.20 at GG Bet | TL $4.23

?OG are yet to have a poor run in any of the competitions they’ve attended this year, and they even won ESL One Stockholm 2022 in May. Since then, OG have pocketed a bronze medal from WEU DPC Tour 3 Div I and reached the semi-finals at Riyadh Masters 2022 just a month ago.

In Arlington, OG played well, but they were eventually eliminated by Team Aster (1-2) after showing some cracks against beastcoast (1-2) and Entity (1-2). And besides their shaky showing in the United States, OG have been forced to play their coach, Evgenii “Chuvash” Makarov, instead of Mikhail “Misha” Agatov in Malaysia.

But even though OG were not too impressive at the last Major and are without their star player, they’re still priced as favourites for this bout, which doesn’t make much sense. Admittedly, Liquid have not won an event this season besides the first WEU DPC Tour, but they are 3-1-2 against OG on the year.

In Arlington, OG and Liquid parted ways with a draw, but OG had a full roster in that game, while Liquid had to play without Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen. With the Finnish Dota 2 star back and OG missing their star player, it is hard not to back Liquid to come out ahead.

ESB brings you free Dota 2 betting picks for a pair of ESL One Malaysia 2022 EU/CIS Closed Qualifier bouts on Thursday, July 28. Here are our selections for Entity vs Into the Breach and Nemiga Gaming vs BetBoom Team, with the best esports odds courtesy of GG Bet.

ENTITY vs INTO THE BREACH Dota 2 BETTING & MATCH DETAILS

Best Odds: Entity $1.14 at GG Bet | ITB $5.00 at GG Bet
When: July 28, 2022 | 14:30 CEST
Watch Live: Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/esl_dota2)

?Into the Breach and Entity will clash on Thursday for the first time since December 2021 and the first time with their current rosters. Entity are heavy favourites which makes sense considering they placed fourth in the upper division of WEU DPC at the start of the month, and they even claimed bronze in Dota 2 Champions League Season 12 a few days before that.

Meanwhile, Into the Breach’s only notable achievement of the year was finishing runner-up in the second division of WEU DPC two weeks back. Still, ITB are on a 10-1 run since April, while their only defeat over that stretch was a 1-2 loss against Riyadh Masters 2022 quarter-finalists Nigma Galaxy.

Entity are stronger, but this is a disrespectful price on Into the Breach, who have shown that they can compete against Tier 1 opponents. Into the Breach with a map handicap at $2.20 is too good to ignore.

NEMIGA GAMING vs BETBOOM TEAM Dota 2 BETTING & MATCH DETAILS

Best Odds: Nemiga $4.50 at GG Bet | BB Team $1.16 at GG Bet
When: July 28, 2022 | 14:30 CEST
Watch Live: Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/esl_dota2)

This affair is very similar to the first one. BetBoom Team placed fourth in EEU Tour 3 Division I, while Nemiga Gaming claimed a silver medal from the second division. Nemiga hold a respectable record, having lost just three from their last 17 outings (14-3), although most of those matches were against weaker opponents.

BetBoom are one of the strongest teams from their region, and they did well at ESL One Stockholm 2022 (7th-8th) in May, but that doesn’t explain why they are priced as $1.16 favourites. This is a regional derby between rosters that know each other well, which works in favour of the outsiders. Moreover, BetBoom Team are not very consistent, and they’ve played just seven official games since the start of June.

We can imagine BetBoom Team sweeping Nemiga, but it’s just as likely for Nemiga Gaming to steal one map.

According to the announcement made by Alliance on July 4, Moiez “symetricaL” Lin has left the organization’s Dota 2 team. The offlaner was signed to Alliance in February and was instrumental in the team’s attempt to battle its way back up to the first division following an unforeseen fall the previous year.

Even though Alliance were promoted to the first division from second in a flash, they have once again had difficulty competing successfully against the top-tier teams. As of July 4, five out of seven series had been completed in the Western European Dota Pro Circuit (DPC), and Alliance had not triumphed in even a single game or series. There are still two weeks left till the end of the season, but it is quite certain that Alliance will be dropped to the second division once the season is through.

SymetricaL has not disclosed what he has planned for the foreseeable future, and as a result, Alliance will play their final two series with a temporary substitute. Since Alliance sailed through the second division in their most recent fall, the squad will concentrate on repeating that success while simultaneously assembling a group that is capable of withstanding the increased competition in the first division.

This month, Alliance were given a spot in the ESL One Malaysia 2022 tournament, despite their poor record on the DPC. The tournament is scheduled to take place on August 23, which means Alliance have less than two months to find a substitute to fill symetricaL’s spot.

A prize pool of US$400,000 will be up for grabs at ESL One Malaysia. The competition, which will take place following the Arlington Major, will not provide any DPC points.
